Hi, I’m Jess

I am a passionate and dedicated dog breeder committed to producing healthy, well-socialized, and top-quality Biewer Terriers. With years of experience and a deep love for our furry friends, I take great pride in breeding exceptional dogs of loving families.

At Cape Town Biewers, we believe in responsible and ethical breeding practices. Our primary goal is to improve the breed standard while prioritizing the overall health, temperament, and conformation of our dogs. We carefully select our females and studs from pedigreed and health-tested parents to ensure that each puppy inherits the best traits and genetic soundness. Our dogs are not just breeding animals; they are beloved members of our family. They receive the utmost care, love, and attention, living in a nurturing and stimulating environment. We provide proper socialization from an early age, exposing them to various experiences, people, and other animals to help them develop into well-rounded and confident individuals. Health and well-being are paramount to me. We work closely with trusted veterinarians to ensure our breeding dogs receive regular health check-ups and screenings for any hereditary conditions. We maintain meticulous records of our dogs' health history, vaccinations, and genetic testing, and we are always available to provide information and support to our puppy owners throughout their dog's life.

We believe in finding the perfect homes for our puppies. As responsible breeders, we carefully screen potential owners to ensure they are knowledgeable and prepared for the commitment of owning a Biewer Terrier. We provide guidance and resources to new puppy owners and remain available for any questions or concerns that may arise.

Our commitment to our dogs and their offspring does not end when the puppy leaves our home. We offer ongoing support and a lifetime of assistance to our puppy owners. We take pride in seeing our puppies grow into cherished family members who bring joy and happiness to their new homes.

We invite you to explore our website and learn more about us and our dogs, and the puppies we have available. We welcome any inquiries or questions you may have and look forward to the opportunity of helping you find your perfect companion.

Thank you for visiting Cape Town Biewers, where we strive to bring happiness, love, and exceptional dogs into your life.

About the Breed

The Biewer Terrier is a small breed of dog that originated in Germany. It was developed by a couple named Werner and Gertrud Biewer in the 1980s. The Biewers were Yorkshire Terrier breeders who were fascinated by the occurrence of puppies with unique coloring in their litters. These puppies had a white base coat with patches of black and tan, unlike the traditional Yorkshire Terrier's coloring.

The Biewers decided to selectively breed these dogs to establish a separate breed with its own distinct characteristics. They named their new breed the Biewer Yorkshire Terrier à la Pom Pon and began working towards breeding dogs with consistent appearance and temperament.

In 1989, the Biewer Terrier was officially recognized as a breed by the Allgemeiner Club der Hundefreunde Deutschland (ACH) in Germany. The breed gained recognition in other countries as well, and the Biewer Terrier Club of America (BTCA) was formed in the United States to promote and preserve the breed.

It's important to note that the Biewer Terrier is sometimes confused with the Yorkshire Terrier due to their similar appearance. However, they are recognized as separate breeds with distinct standards and characteristics. The Biewer Terrier has gained popularity worldwide and continues to be bred and shown as a distinct breed.

Temperament

Loyal and Devoted: Biewer Terriers are known to form strong bonds with their owners and families. They are loyal and devoted companions who enjoy being in the company of their loved ones. They often thrive on human interaction and seek attention and affection.

Playful and Energetic: Despite their small size, Biewer Terriers are often energetic and playful. They have a lively disposition and enjoy playtime, whether it's interactive games, fetch, or simply running around the house or yard. Regular exercise and mental stimulation are important to keep them happy and content.

Intelligent and Alert: Biewer Terriers are very intelligent dogs. They are quick to learn and can be trainable with consistent and positive reinforcement-based methods. They are also known for their alertness and make good watchdogs as they will often alert their owners to any potential intruders or unusual sounds.

Sociable and Friendly: Biewer Terriers are typically friendly towards people and enjoy socializing. They can get along well with children and other pets when properly introduced and socialized from a young age. Early socialization is important to ensure they develop good manners and adapt well to different environments and situations.

Affectionate and Cuddly: Biewer Terriers often have a loving and affectionate nature. They enjoy cuddling up with their owners and being part of family activities. They may seek out physical contact and enjoy being petted and held.

Size

Biewer Terriers are classified as a toy breed and typically weigh between 1.8 to 3.2kg when fully grown. They stand about 18 to 28 cm tall at the shoulder.  Smaller sizes have been born and these babies are healthy and strong, their personalities make up for the rest of their size. We call them a "mini muis" and seem to have one in every litter.

Allergies

Biewer Terriers are often considered hypoallergenic, but it's important to note that no dog breed is completely hypoallergenic. People with allergies react to allergens produced by dogs, such as dander, saliva, and urine. While Biewer Terriers may produce fewer allergens compared to some other breeds, individual reactions can still vary.

The Biewer Terrier's hypoallergenic reputation is primarily attributed to its coat type. They have a long, silky, and non-shedding coat that resembles human hair rather than traditional fur. This type of coat may reduce the amount of dander and loose hair that is released into the environment, potentially causing fewer allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Grooming

Grooming is an essential aspect of caring for a Biewer Terrier. Their long, silky coat requires regular maintenance to keep it healthy, tangle-free, and looking its best. Here are some grooming tips for Biewer Terriers:

Brushing: Biewer Terriers should be brushed frequently to prevent matting and tangles. Use a slicker brush or a pin brush to gently brush their coat, starting from the roots and working your way to the ends. Pay close attention to areas prone to tangles, such as behind the ears, under the legs, and around the tail. Regular brushing also helps to remove loose hair and reduce shedding.

Bathing: Biewer Terriers should be bathed regularly to keep their coat clean and free of dirt and debris. Use a mild, dog-specific shampoo and conditioner that is suitable for their coat type. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid leaving any residue in the coat. After bathing, gently towel dry or use a hairdryer on a low or cool setting to prevent the coat from becoming too tangled.

Coat Maintenance: Biewer Terriers have a long, flowing coat that can reach the ground. Many owners opt to keep their coat trimmed shorter for easier maintenance. If you prefer to maintain a longer coat, regular trimming is necessary to prevent the hair from dragging on the ground and becoming soiled or tangled.

Eye and Ear Care: Check and clean your Biewer Terrier's eyes regularly to remove any discharge or tear stains. Use a damp cloth or a specialized eye cleaner recommended by your veterinarian. Additionally, examine their ears weekly for signs of redness, irritation, or wax buildup. Clean their ears with a dog-specific ear cleaning solution and gently wipe the inner ear with a cotton ball or a soft cloth.

Teeth and Nail Care: Like all dogs, Biewer Terriers require regular dental care. Brush their teeth at least two to three times a week using a dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste. Trim their nails regularly, being cautious not to cut into the quick (the sensitive area within the nail). If you're unsure about nail trimming, consult a professional groomer or your veterinarian for assistance.

Professional Grooming: While regular at-home grooming is necessary, it can be beneficial to schedule regular visits to a professional groomer. They can provide specialized care, such as coat trimming, shaping, and professional grooming techniques, to maintain the Biewer Terrier's unique appearance.

Remember to make grooming a positive experience for your Biewer Terrier by offering treats, praise, and gentle handling. Additionally, regular grooming sessions provide an opportunity to check for any skin abnormalities, lumps, or signs of parasites, allowing you to monitor your dog's overall health.
